Save Net Radio

The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger. Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on July 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). To protest these rates and encourage the millions of net radio listeners to take action and contact their Congressional representatives, a national Day of Silence will be held June 26.

Gay Pride Weekend

It's going to be a hot weekend. Because of the temperature, sure, but it's also Twin Cities Pride. That means short shorts, naked men in barrels, and the inherent sexiness of being out and proud.

Here's a fun taste of the 2006 Pride festival to get you warmed up. If you take any video this weekend - or anytime - drop a line to story@mnstories.com.

Let's Go Crazy

How have we gone so long without posting a Purple Rain-era Prince video? If you want to get a little deeper, check out video covers of this song by Ysabella Brave and the very Prince-y Vince Gibbs.

This week we'll have a sweet video from the Northeast Minneapolis parade, so "stay tuned" for that.

Alec Soth: Portraits

From artist/filmmaker Mike Dust:

In October of 2004, photographer Alec Soth went on assignment for LIFE magazine to capture weekend soldiers at an Airsoft military simulation in Joelton, Tennessee.

In anticipation of his upcoming Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program exhibition, filmmaker Mike Dust traveled alongside Soth for this three-day excursion, interviewing and shooting alongside him as he worked to capture images for, both the magazine shoot as well as for his personal work.

A number of these photographs (Odessa, Joelton, Tennessee, 2004 and Josh, Joelton, Tennessee, 2004) became part of the exhibition Alec Soth: Portraits at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts the following spring. The video piece created during that shoot was installed in the gallery as an accompaniment to the exhibition.

The video is broken into three segments entitled On Assignment, Portraiture, and The Ground Glass.

Dog Rescued from Pipe!

Mark Pierce from LeRoy, MN brings us a scary story with a happy ending:

This is what our dog had to endure for over 24 hours after she went chasing after a bunny. Her head was stuck in an old stove pipe. After figuring out how to get her out, and what tools to use, it took us over 30 minutes to cut her out. The other German Shepherd in the picture (Tommy, her mate) is the one who actually found her and alerted us after we searched for over 24 hours. I took Tommy to her last known spot and he located her and alerted us to where she was within a couple of minutes.

She seems to be fine, except for an abrasion to one of her ears and a superficial cut to her chest. It was a after thought to put music by the Traveling Wilburys song: End of the Line, this pup was at the end of her line. She's one lucky dog.

The Delilahs

The Delilahs are having a highly-anticipated, one-time-only reunion show at Finnegan's Summerfest this Saturday, June 9 at the Cabooze. If you were on the Minneapolis music scene in the 90's, you'll remember their soaring pop harmonies and mandolin. Here's a 9 minute interview with two members of the band about what brought them together and what the future has in store.

Here are some photos from the pre-reunion show, courtesy of Sara Rubinstein Photography.

Finnegan's Summerfest

Here's a sobering fact: 47% of Hennepin County's homeless population is under 18. That was unacceptable to Finnegans founder Jacquie Berglund, who decided to do something about it - have a giant rock show. Finnegan's Summerfest is happening this Saturday, June 9, at the Cabooze. "4 stages, 28 bands, 1 great cause."

All proceeds will benefit Heading Home Hennepin, which plans to end homelessness in Minneapolis by 2016.

The Delilahs are having a highly-anticipated, one-time-only reunion show at Summerfest. If you were on the Minneapolis music scene in the 90's, you'll remember they're soaring pop harmonies and mandolin. Minnesota Stories has an exclusive interview with two of the band members coming up tomorrow.

On Friday, January the 13th, 2006 Jonathon Sharkey became a candidate for the Governor of Minnesota. Jonathon is a Satanic Dark Priest, Sanguinarian Vampyre and a Hecate Witch.
