Seems like only yesterday all the lakes were frozen and the ground covered with snow. Need proof? Here's a video by Jane Scott about the Art Shanty Projects, with detailed info about many of the shanties. Got a Minnesota-related video to share? Minnesota native Sheila Grogan stays true to the deep values of her roots despite brutal betrayal by her husband, IBM's CFO. What does it mean to win? "It doesn't matter whether you win or loose; it's how you play the game that counts." OR "The ends justify the means." His stories will live on thanks to the videos of Duane Kuss from DigElog ROCORI - you can find many of them here. In this story, Herb talks about the tornado that hit Cold Spring on June 27, 1894. His great grandmother was standing, holding the front door shut as the tornado wiped out the barn not more than 200 feet just to the south of the house. Slug is hilarious. Brother Ali is sincere. Together they are unstoppable. Posted by Minnesota Stories at 02:11 PM | Comments (5) SXSW: The DeathsDespite their name, The Deaths are not remotely goth. American Gothic, maybe. I had to go all the way to Austin, TX to see this Minneapolis-via-Fargo band play for the first time and I liked what I heard: Lots of 60's influences and a sense of mourning in the fields. MSPmag's Megan Wiley has more thoughts in her Wednesday writeup. Posted by Minnesota Stories at 01:06 PM | Comments (0) SXSW: Pete Townshend excerptWe were allowed to film the first few minutes of rock legend Pete Townshend's keynote at SXSW. The really good stuff came after those minutes, of course: Keith Moon, playing with new musicians, playing a song for one person over the internet. It was certainly more engaging than Dan Rather's keynote a few days earlier. MSPmag's Megan Wiley posts her thoughts. This ice bar has a nice open fire pit next to it. Fire and ice, Minnesota nice - I think there's a bad rap song here somewhere. Disclaimer: I made this for the Chambers web site. I'd hoped to post a "Director's Cut" of this video, where the manager talks about how some lady customers desire to imprint their bosoms on the ice bar. But alas, time is short, so let your imagination run wild. Finally, I'll be rocking non-stop with Minnesota bands along with MSP magazine's Megan Wiley. Check back here and mspmag.com for updates, including interviews and clips from the live shows. This video is my experience shooting some video clips of a Soundtrack of Our Lives show at a certain local rock club. I like to say that cellphone cameras have replaced lighters at rock shows. You see them as far as the eye can see. Photos, video, audio – people capturing moments. We're living in an age of personal media explosion. Unfortunately there's friction between that reality and those with an overzealous desire to control and protect commercial copyright. So here's me, caught in the friction.
