Reggae @ St. Johns December 06, 2006
When you think of places to hear reggae music, St. John's College in rural Minnesota is the first place that pops into your mind, right? Okay, I'm kidding. But after watching this video the connection is made. English Prof. Mike Optiz, a fan and player of raggae music, says "Minnesota has always been a hotbed of reggae."
This short documentary is by St. John's documentary student David Slifka. His teacher is Minnesota documentary filmmaker Lu Lippold, and lucky for all of us, her students sent a handful of short films to screen here on Minnesota Stories. Watch for more this week and next!
(And don't forget to watch Vlog Santa)

Great Work David. I'm looking forward to seeing more work from these St. John's students. Lu Lippold must be an exceptional professor. Her work around the Minneapolis area does not go unnoticed

St. John's/St. Ben's really is a hotbed of reggae and calypso music! My Trinidadian wife went to St. Ben's along with a good 25 more Trinis in her class alone.
They have great recruitment numbers from the Caribbean as a whole... which does a great job of pulling that culture into the heart of the Midwest.
