On the Road Moments with Edwards

Hello friends! As you may have noticed, Minnesota Stories was taking a nap between Xmas and New Years. During that time I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel with and film presidential candidate John Edwards.

We began in New Orleans, then on to a town meeting in Des Moines, Iowa and finally New Hampshire. That's where I got off and returned home. Here are a few odd random moments edited together on the plane. Enjoy, and watch for proper videos and interviews on Rocketboom and YouTube.

Searching for Santa's Reindeer

From DigElogROCORI: Have you ever asked yourself about how Santa gets his reindeer? Well we ran into Donnar and Blitzen while they were pulling folks around just outside the historic Salem Church out in the country north of Paynesville, MN. In this story you'll learn about what its takes to raise and train a reindeer to pull Santa's sleigh.

Mooki's Xmas Present

From MookiTV: If we wake up Christmas morning to find all of our presents shredded to bits, we'll only have ourselves to blame. Of course, our presents won't have catnip toys in them like this present we gave Mooki. Once he realizes what's inside, he goes nuts tearing into it. Fun for the whole family, and even people you hate!

Happy Holidays from Mooki, and his aunties Jasmine and Indie.

Snowy Greetings to You

Yes, we finally got the first significant snowfall of the season (thanks, global warming!). I thought I'd climb up on my roof and say hello, and season's greetings. There's also a little Christmasy snippet from Pharyngula. We'll have a terrific interview with him before the new year. Meanwhile, check out all the fine work by St. John's documentary students over there on the left. Horses, monks, oh my!

Celebrity Impression: Cliff Huxtable

I'm so excited Karina is back from her travels and vlogging on the Schmlog once again. This video just cracks me up.

Now that we've got "Desperado" and Bill Cosby out of our system, we'll be getting back to lots of great work from St. John's documentary students next week.

Have a great weekend, and share your videos: story@mnstories.com.

Desperado

Ten days ago, a man named Taylor sent me the following email:

my friend Miss Claudia from the Jug Band and I spent the last 8 days at seven different Northeast bars singin' some karaoke. At each bar we did the same rendition of "Desperado" and Chuck Terhark from City Pages video taped us and is going to make a totally sweet music video by piecing together sections from each of the bars.

BEHOLD! This is that totally sweet music video. You'll laugh. You'll cry in your beer. And probably puke in it, too.

CELEBRATING YOUNG PEOPLE MAKING MEDIA

On December 7, 2006, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Phillips Community Television (in partnership with KFAI and the Midtown Global Market) will be holding a video screening and celebration event at the Riverview Theater in Minneapolis to celebrate over thirteen years of youth journalism and filmmaking.

“How has PCTV impacted my life? It taught me a lot about cameras and all the other stuff we do here. It kept me out of trouble and I never really realized that until I found out the hard way. When people say that being in community programs help you I never believed them. Now I know it does.” - A 15-year-old girl in the PCTV after school program.

There will be guest speakers from the local media community sharing the stage with young people from the PCTV youth media program.

The highlight of the evening will be a three-part presentation of excerpts from many of PCTV’s award winning work.

Reggae @ St. Johns

When you think of places to hear reggae music, St. John's College in rural Minnesota is the first place that pops into your mind, right? Okay, I'm kidding. But after watching this video the connection is made. English Prof. Mike Optiz, a fan and player of raggae music, says "Minnesota has always been a hotbed of reggae."

This short documentary is by St. John's documentary student David Slifka. His teacher is Minnesota documentary filmmaker Lu Lippold, and lucky for all of us, her students sent a handful of short films to screen here on Minnesota Stories. Watch for more this week and next!

(And don't forget to watch Vlog Santa)

mnartists: Anastasia Ward

Interactive toy sculpture artist Anastasia Ward is the subject of this new "Minnesota Stories presents: mnartists" video. I can't help but think of her art as "toy mashups." She combines parts of stuffed animals with the electronic toy guts to create something new: Magical, creepy, lifelike creatures, perhaps imbued with an emotional history.
