The Santas Are Running

Vlog Santa is back! And he has his own web site: Vlogsanta.tv

Sunday, Nov. 26 was the first "Running of the Santas" before the Holidazzle parade in downtown Minneapolis. (Apparently they weren't supposed to use that name. Here's the official Running of the Santas) It was a benefit for Legal Aid, providing free civil legal services to low-income and disadvantaged people throughout Minnesota.

Vlog Santa was confused about the event, however. He thought they were raising money for criminals. When the santas started running, Vlog Santa panicked because he assumed the cops were after them. Oh Vlog Santa, when will you ever learn! (laughter)

Vlog Santa has more adventures in store. Meanwhile, he is reluctantly obligated to answer your computer video questions. Email santa@vlogsanta.tv with your questions, which MUST be in video form. You can send video to Vlog Santa with services like YouSendIt or just stick it on YouTube or Blip.tv.

Vlog Santa is also offering personalized video greetings this year for $25. Details coming soon.

What Muslim Prayer Looks Like

In light of the detention of six Muslim clerics by US Airways in the Twin Cities, it might be fruitful to show Minnesotans what a Muslim prayer looks like.

A telling quote from the story: A US Airways gate agent wrote that three of the men prayed in Arabic at the gate. "I was suspicious by the way they were praying very loud," the gate agent said.

Heck, I might well be suspicious of anyone praying loudly, regardless of their religion. Nevertheless, I fear many Minnesotans see a Muslim kneeling and chanting on a prayer rug and imagine "Death to America!" This video may clear the air with both Arabic and English translations from part of the Muslim noon prayer - one of five daily prayers.

When former Hüsker bass player Greg Norton isn't wearing a chef's hat, he's kicking out the jams in The Gang Font.

Jim Smoked Pot... Now His Voice Is Shot!

Don't let it happen to you! A well-told story of overindulgence from Duane Kuss from DigElog ROCORI.

By the way, I'm been remiss in announcing here that Minnesota Stories won two awards at The Vloggies in San Francisco! We won for Favorite Community Vlog and People's Choice for Community Vlog. I'll post video from the awards sometime soon. They played Duane's Team Milking Contest video after announcing the winner, which really underscores that these awards truly belong to everyone who has contributed a Minnesota story. Hooray for us!

mnartists: Jonathan Nelson

AWESOME ANNOUNCEMENT
mnartists.org teams with Minnesota Stories for a video series on Minnesota artists

I'm so excited to kickoff this series, and to be working with mnartists.org. I know that sounds like press release language, but it's true. Nothing is more rewarding to me than documenting artists in their space, learning the how/why/where behind their art and crafting their story in video form.

The first artist is my longtime friend Jon Nelson, most famous as host of Some Assembly Required and his sound collage alter-ego, Escape Mechanism. What you may not know is he creates beautiful visual mashups of old theater lights and other objects, such as suitcases and shovels. Jon is aprt of a show called "create • destroy • repeat" opening Dec 1 at Rosalux Gallery.

Special thanks to Jon, and to Kathleen Kvern for instigating and guiding this online video series.

Tater Twat Hotdish

What do you get when you cross Charles Bukowski with Ze Frank? Genius. What you get is genius.

Duluth native John Holden does weird things at Detrimental Information, also the name of his zine. This video probably has what you'd call "explicit content." Yesterday we had a very woman-positive vibe on Minnesota Stories, and today - well, you just never know what's going to happen.

John writes: I show you how to make a tater tot/twat hotdish. I take one comment. And then it's the final episode of the Cathie and John Show. The music in this episode was composed by my cousin, Drew Doom.

Tracks of the Land

This video comes to us from artist and educator Kari Tauring, who writes:

I have a music video created in the early '90s which I have used in performance recently. It is called "Tracks on the Land" and deals with the sale and destruction of farm land in the midwest.

(Note: Music doesn't start for a few seconds.)
