Legendary sound collage artists Negativland have been making intellectual property waves for over 25 years. They were famously sued by U2 in 1991, commemorated recently in an unauthorized Special-Edition Negativland vs. U2 iPod. But did you know about their controversial connection to Minnesota? Here'a a little background on how their song "Christianity is Stupid" was partially blamed for the David Brom ax murders in Rochester, Minnesota.

Founding member Mark Hosler is in town for Negativlandland, a group exhibition which runs through June 10 at Creative Electric Studios. It's brilliant - go see it!

I've got more great interview with Mark that I'll try to post this weekend, especially dealing with copyright issues and their role in the Creative Commons sample license. For you IP geeks.

That was great. "Christianity is stupid, Communism is good" was hilarious. I'm looking forward to seeing the extra clips of the interview; Mark looked like a fun and interesting guy.

Excellent piece. I had heard of Negativland before, but never really understood what they were about. Gotta go farm the Internets for them now.

Also, PBR is the life-blood.

I love the Helter Stupid story! It shows just how out of hand and misconstrued the media can get.

The other guy at the pinic table has a striking resemblence to David Brom. Hmmm...
