Oh, Itasca!
March 02, 2006

This is an edited version of the 10-minute video, The Cradle of the Father of Waters from 1938. Apparently, there used to be pagaents featuring Indians and fur traders prancing about together, symbolicallly marrying and killing each other. Ahh, the good ol' days. The video also features strapping young men building log cabins - always a favorite.

This video originates from The National Archives.

As misrepresentative as these old movies were back then, I still love watching them.

The folks in the Civilian Conservation Corps took great pride in their work, as did all the people in the marvelous public works projects of the New Deal. The Minnesota Historial Society website has a nice article about the historic structures at Itasca State Park. I believe one of them is the Old Timer's Cabin described in the film as "surely ... permanent in their construction."
