Bruce Sterling
March 23, 2006

Join me in a short conversation with Bruce Sterling: science-fiction writer, Wired magazine blogger, environmentalist, and noted critic of technology and culture. All of this, and what do we talk about? Shoes. Don't worry - Bruce can start with shoes and end up in a tagged reality that saves us from the next Hurricane Katrina.

EVENT: Rirkrit Tiravanija and Bruce Sterling, free @ Walker Art Center

Special thanks to Paul Schmelzer for hooking this up. Paul blogs for the Walker's Off Center and his own excellent Eyeteeth.

Interesting/eccentric concepts Chuck.
Also tonight: Princeton bioethics professor Peter Singer is lecturing at the U of M. Jen and I are going.

Wow! I'm gonna start tagging my house.

Did you ask him to autograph your shoe?

Posted by: taulpaul at March 23, 2006 02:34 PM

autographs are passé Paul -- it's all about tagging man! no permission required!

i should make a blog and Flickr page for my dead shoe. anybody got a spare RFID chip with GPS?

Chuck, the added text really helped explain spimes nicely. I saw Sterling's talk at SXSW and left it a little confused, but a quick wikipedia moment and your interview straightened me out. It's interesting that much of what constitutes a spime is already in place in the corporate world--Wal-Mart RFIDing their merchandise to reduse shrinkage, etc.

Good interview.

Thanks Bill -- the interview helped me understand the concept better, too. :-)

Bruce actually talked about how Walmart and the Pentagon, for example, are at the cutting edge of this technology. I'll have to make an MP3 of the full interview.

Please do! I'd love to hear it.
