Cable Fable
February 16, 2006

Videoblogging? It's just the new cable access. Okay, it's more complicated than that, but this language of citizens taking back the media has been around way before anybody coughed up the word "blog." Just ask the author of this video, our mediavangelist friend "Media Mike" Hazard:

CABLE FABLES is a media relic from the salad days of vidiots and newvicon tube cameras. Widely known as the godfather of public access to cable television, George Stoney last came to the Twin Cities in 1980 to conduct workshops with citizens on how to develop good franchise agreements with cable companies and cities. Bloomington had cable, so he went to visit. As you watch, think “internet” when you hear “cable” and “television”. The issues sync, then and now.

Stoney returns to our neighborhood for four days packed with classes, screenings and the Alliance for Community Media conference. Tonight he kicks things off at Macalester College with a screening of his new film,Getting Out. For the full tilt, zoom to thecie.org.

That was a great piece. The more mundane footage about television use is almost more interesting than the main story. I'd love to see more "archive stories" like this that give a snap shot of Minnesota's past.

Also, I really enjoyed your visit to Carleton. You should visit more classes; this seems to be a great recruiting technique for this vlog. You got me watching.

I agree, really good piece. I think it is important to realize that a lot of these feelings we are having about new media etc really aren't all that new..it sheds a little light on human nature I think.

I love archival footage and glimpses of MN history like that. It's also nice to remind everyone that the idea of taking the media into our own hands in not new, it is just a lot cheaper and therefore easier these days.

I totally loved the show today. Chuck you are really right about this. The only real difference is that now people have MUCH higher quality equipment, and ways to distribute it to anybody. As far as what's going to go - well, content is still king. It will always determine what will last. The only real difference now is that you don't have the gate-keepers distilling out the creative and saving the drek. Now you have drek and creative, cheek and jowl. Very cool.
