Vlog Remix

November is remix month! So says the seminal vlog news site We Are the Media. I had to throw my hastily-assembled hat into the ring before the month was up. Enjoy, remix, and send in your stuff.

What could be more exciting then playing Minnesota Fats (real name Rudolf Wanderone) in a game of video game billiards? Yeah, just about anything.

Snowboarding

Today the Twin Cities are blanketed in snow. Probably not a big deal to you folks up north. Starfire caught a little snowboarding action in his neighborhood earlier this week. Dig the Christmas City song!

"thanks"

Turkey looks gross, doesn't it? I still eat it though, because it's tasty. I'm thankful for our abundance of food, and our warm house, and all the people in my life, and cameras and computers and the internets. I'm thankful for Chasing Windmills, the best new vlog around.

Family

This personal history video is one of the best I've ever seen, and it speaks for itself. Happy Thanksgiving, and if you have a camera - turn it on and talk to your family. You'll be glad you did.

Ethiopians Protest Carter

"President Jimmy Carter was at a book signing tour on Sunday, November 20, 2005 at the Barnes & Noble, Edina at which he was greeted by angry demonstrators over his center's early pronouncement of the polls in favor of the ruling party. Carter center was one of the election observing bodies and is remembered to have issued a report declaring the ruling party the winner of the 2005 [election] despite the larger EU observer missions preliminary report that cast major doubt and declared the elections “not free and not fair” when gauged against widely accepted international standards.

Most of the demonstrators are sympathizers of the major opposition, Coalition for Unity and Democracy. CUD contested the results of the elections and boycotted Parliament until the government meets eight preconditions which, according to demonstrators would have ushered the independent institutions necessary for a stable democratic system. Following the first session of parliament, unrest claimed the lives of at least 45 civilian lives and the arrest of 15,000 people including the imprisonment of all of CUD’s leadership."

Word.

Ms. O'Malley and the Hill City Rockers hosted "WORD!" at Duluth's Pizza Luce on Thursday, November 10. Billed as the open mic to end all open mics, "WORD!" heard the Duluth poetry scene colliding with the Duluth hip-hop scene. Nobody was hurt in the altercation, although several people were reported to have enjoyed a delicious mashed potato pizza.

Gardening at Night

The days are shorter and the nights are colder, so Lori plants her tulip bulbs in the dark after work. Notice how I keep a safe documentary distance from any physical exertion.

The Edmund Fitzgerald

Let's just pause a moment while the Gordon Lightfoot song cycles through our mind's ear. Okay, that's enough. I've always loved that song, but never knew much about the sinking of the real ship. She sunk 30 years ago to the day, November 10, 1975. There were no survivors. Here's the true story from Thom Holden of the Lake Superior Maritime Visitors Center.

Boat nerds may want to check out Gales of November in Duluth this weekend. Two full days of Stormy Lakes and Shipwrecks talk.

24x24

Have you seen any good stuff at the City Pages Get Reel filmfest? You have if you've gone, I'd bet. Not only is it like a trip through the passionate and obscure inner reaches of Rob Nelson's brain, it's a showcase for the best emerging Minnesota documentary work.

Tonight is no exception. Mike Reano's trailer for 24x24 screens at 9:30 before The Outsider. We have the first few minutes for you here, a Minnesota Stories exclusive! Reano's doc profiles the gravel-throated Chicago film critic Michael Wilmington. Watching this trailer, you get the feeling Wilmington is the last of a certain breed of American intellectual character.

Iraq Vet: Andrew

On August 19, 2004, Sen. Max Cleland visited the Minnesota State Capitol to speak at a veterans rally. Before he spoke, a very disillusioned marine named Andrew spoke his mind about the Iraq War he fought in, and how badly it's been bungled since he marched into Baghdad.

I'm hoping to interview some Minnesota National Guard men and women who've served in Iraq. Not from any particular angle, but simply to hear their stories and views.

Cart Parade

Duluth's Whole Foods Co-op recently closed it's doors and reopened in a new spot. How to get all the foodstuffs over there? A cart parade, of course.
